Chief Deputy Mike Carlson
Chief Deputy Mike Carlson has served as a licensed peace officer for 23 years and he was a highly decorated Minneapolis Police Officer for 19 years before joining the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office. He was awarded the Medal of Valor and numerous other honors. In the Minneapolis Police Department, Carlson commanded the Homicide Unit, the Narcotics Task Force, and also supervised the highly successful Violent Offender Task Force, the Weapons Task Force, and the Joint Terrorism Task Force. For the past five years, Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek has directed Chief Carlson to command the daily operations of the Sheriff's Office. Chief Carlson has served as the Incident Commander for the Sheriff's Office during the Republican National Convention in 2008 and throughout the river recovery operations after the I-35W bridge collapse in 2007. Working with Sheriff Stanek, Chief Carlson spearheaded the creation of an innovative unit, Sheriff’s Office Criminal Information Sharing and Analysis (CISA). The unit provides predictive policing services and criminal analysis to law enforcement agencies throughout the metro and the region. On a national level, CISA has been recognized as a model for its crime prevention and analysis services. |

Major Jeffrey Storms commands the Detention/Court Services Bureau. The bureau includes the Hennepin County Jail, the Court Security Unit, and the Information Technology Unit. Previously he led the Enforcement Services Bureau. Prior to his role on the Command Staff, he served as a lieutenant in the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Water Patrol Unit, promoting boat and water safety, investigating water related accidents and supervising the Underwater Recovery Team. He started as a Hennepin County Detention Deputy in 1992. He’s also worked as a sergeant in the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office Patrol Division. Major Storms earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from Mankato State University. He’s a graduate of the FBI National Academy. |

Major Tracey Martin directs the Administrative Services Bureau which develops training and procedures for employees. Previously, she has worked in Court Security, the Background Unit, Internal Affairs, and Professional Standards. The public may recognize Major Martin because she has served as the media spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office. She began her career at the Sheriff’s Office in 1996 as a student in the Cadet Program. Major Martin has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Minnesota. She currently serves on the Minnesota POST Board (Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and Training Board).

Major Kip Carver commands the Investigations Bureau. He has been with the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office since 1990. He began in the Adult Detention Center and then moved to the Court Security Division in 1993. He has worked as a Crime Laboratory Technician, Crime Scene Sergeant, Internal Affairs investigator, and Patrol Unit Sergeant. In 2007, he was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the Water Patrol Unit. Major Carver has an AAS degree in law enforcement from Inver Hills Community College and a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Concordia University-St Paul. He attended the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command in 2009. |

Major Darrell Huggett leads the Enforcement Services Bureau. In that role, he oversees the Enforcement Service Division and the Communications Division. Previously at the Sheriff’s Office, he worked as a captain in the Hennepin County Jail where his focus was to manage a program to effectively reduce costs of required in-custody inmate medical care. Major Huggett has served as a lieutenant in the Patrol Unit and as a sergeant in the Warrant Unit. He began his law enforcement career in 1987 as an officer with a suburban police department and he joined the Sheriff's Office in 1997. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from Mankato State University and he's a graduate of the FBI National Academy. |
