The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Unit is part of the Enforcement Services Division which also includes the Water Patrol Unit, Transport Unit, Warrant Apprehension Unit, and Special Operations Unit.

The mission of the Patrol Unit is to fulfill the statutory duties of the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office: to “keep and preserve the peace of the county” by providing public safety to citizens and visitors; responding to emergencies and calls for assistance; investigating incidents and criminal acts; promoting community policing, crime prevention and public safety education; and maximizing the efficient use of available resources.

Deputies in the Patrol Unit partner with state and local law enforcement  in several DWI enforcement efforts each year such as Safe & Sober and Operation NightCAP.

The Patrol Unit provides law enforcement services to a number of communities 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. The Patrol Unit is the primary law enforcement service provider to six communities and two county facilities:

• Fort Snelling
• Greenfield
• Hanover (Hennepin County)
• Hassan Township
• Medicine Lake
• Rockford (Hennepin County)
• Hennepin County Home School
• Hennepin County Adult Corrections Facility
 
The Patrol Unit manages the SafeZone detail which provides additional patrols to downtown Minneapolis during the summer. The Sheriff’s Office patrols for more than 3,000 hours in a 14-week period. 
 
The Patrol Unit provides specialized services throughout Hennepin County including police K-9 services, commercial vehicle enforcement, DARE instruction for youth, and a Special Enforcement Response Team (SERT). The mission of SERT is to increase public safety through the building of collaborative, ongoing partnerships with local law enforcement.
 
Among SERT’s major responsibilities:
  • Direct patrols in areas identified as hot spots for crime
  • Response to in-progress crimes
  • Water emergency response  
  • Dignitary protection details operations
  • Operational support for other units such as the Narcotics Unit
