ISSUE FIFTY-SEVEN: August 28, 2008

Sheriff Rich Stanek

I am pleased to announce two major achievements at the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office Adult Detention Division. Earlier this month, we learned our jail received American Corrections Association (ACA) Accreditation. Two weeks later, the Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association announced Detention Captain Mike Wresh has been named the 2008 Jail Administrator of the Year.

As for the ACA Accreditation, we should all be very proud that we continue to receive this prestigious national recognition. The process is long and arduous. In order to qualify, ACA outlines sixty mandatory standards and more than 200 non-mandatory standards. These standards help direct our policies and procedures in daily operations. Everyone who works at the jail helped to make this award possible. Earning the accreditation requires incredible attention to detail and documentation throughout a three year period. Only 139 jails in the United States are accredited. Whenever I speak to community groups or political leaders about the jail, I am pleased to tell them our jail has earned this honor. I commend the employees of the Adult Detention Division for their hard work.

Detention Captain Mike Wresh's leadership was integral in earning the accreditation -- in addition, he has achieved his own mark of distinction. In September, the Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association will hold a ceremony to officially recognize Detention Captain Wresh as Jail Administrator of the Year. His extraordinary leadership during the 35W bridge collapse and the accreditation process highlight a long list of his achievements. He’s well-respected in the metro and statewide jail administrators’ groups. He proudly serves on the Large Jail Network for the National Institute of Corrections. I believe the Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association has never had a more distinguished honoree than Detention Captain Wresh.

First Responders Week
I know it was earlier in the month, but I wanted to say thanks to those who participated in First Responders Week at the Metrodome. This annual event gives First Responders a chance to be honored through the eyes of local sports, like the Minnesota Twins. We had a mobile command truck stationed outside the Metrodome for the event.
