Phone scams
Cops don’t call for cash
Law enforcement never calls or emails you about paying them money.
Scammers pose as law enforcement by doing things like:
- Demanding payment for a missed court date, jury duty or other legal matter
- Claiming there is a warrant issued in your name
- Threatening arrest unless you pay a fine
- Directing you to buy a prepaid money transfer card and giving the card number to them
- Faking their phone number so it appears valid on caller ID
Protect yourself:
- Refuse to give the scammer any information
- Don’t send them any payments
- Hang up and don’t rely on your caller ID
- Record their number and save any voicemails
- Look up the real number for the law enforcement agency the scammer mentioned and contact them directly
